Job Ad & Profile Description

Position : Wildlife Justice Advisor

Space for Giants is seeking to recruit a Wildlife Justice Advisor for the KAZA Region (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia).

Space for Giants is an international conservation organisation that protects Africa’s remaining natural ecosystems and the mega-fauna they contain, whilst bringing major economic and social value to local communities and national governments. It is headquartered in Kenya, works in nine countries in Africa, and is registered as a charity in the UK and a 501c3 non profit in the US.

  • Our Vision is for a Healthy Earth on which both large wild animals and people can thrive
  • Our Mission is to protect the natural ecosystems on which Africa’s large wild animals depend and ensure they are valued by people so that they endure, forever
  • What we do:
  • Management: We bring natural ecosystems where large wild animals live under effective conservation management in partnership with local people, national governments, civil society organizations, responsible businesses and private landowners.
  • Value: We unlock the value of natural ecosystems by developing conservation-compatible enterprises and working to ensure the associated benefits are equitably distributed among local people.
  • Expertise: We deploy world-class conservation expertise to build local capacity for the effective protection of wildlife and the management of human-wildlife coexistence.
  • Leadership: We generate innovative science and ideas to identify successful conservation interventions and lobby key decision makers, global influencers and the general public to put these in place.
  • Scale: We deliver conservation at scale to tackle the global problems threatening natural ecosystems and the large wild animals they hold.

Space for Giants is placing a WJA and associated support staff and infrastructure in key wildlife source and destination countries to effectively combat wildlife crime. This will not only support countries to protect their natural heritage it will also help to prevent the next pandemic.

Our Wildlife Justice and Rule of Law Programme aims to improve the responsiveness of the criminal justice pathway to wildlife crime. We are looking for someone to lead this work at the policy and practitioner level in a number of countries and, so, seek a dynamic, self-starter who can communicate at all levels and lead this new and important development of the programme.

The programme currently has four major strands of work that feed into each other, namely; court monitoring, law/policy development, legal capacity building and wildlife justice advocacy.  Baseline wildlife crime national surveys are done to inform systemic interventions at a law/policy national/regional levels. We then deliver targeted legal capacity building work to all relevant state actors to better apply the reformed/existing legal and policy frameworks.  Continuous court monitoring and wildlife justice advocacy monitors the progress and informs further development. This holistic approach is crucial to the success of the programme which has contributed to increasing wildlife crime convictions from 24% to 90% in Kenya which has in turn led to a drop in poaching by 80% over the last 3 years.  Key to the future is having Wildlife Justice Advisors (WJA) who are highly knowledgeable/skilled at collaboratively working with national authorities on their urgent priorities.
