Medical Laboratory Scientist student
Scottish Livingstone Hospital Laboratory
I was attached at the hospital laboratory where I had the opportunity to work in the Viral load, CD4, Microbiology, serology and Lab reception sections. This furnished me with first hand experience in being a Medical laboratory scientist. I ran molecular tests (viral load, HIV PCR), serological tests (VDRL, RHT), CD4 testing and microbiological tests, by culturing, microscopy examination, sensitivity testing and analysing body fluids to aid in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases. I was also involved in stock management in all sections, where I made sure there is constant supply of reagents and consumables in the lab. Performed quality control on a regular basis, decontaminated work surfaces before and after use.

Princess Marina Hospital Laboratory
I did my clinical rotation at one of the busiest laboratories in Botswana, Princess Marina lab. At this lab I had first hand experience in working in an accredited laboratory and worked in the Haematology, Chemistry, Reception and Blood bank sections. I attended to many clients every day, assisting them with their orders and offering advice when needed. I performed regular quality controls for tests, did daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of analysers. I assisted in keeping the lab clean by decontaminating work benches before and after use. I was involved in stock management in the lab, where we performed stock count, and ensuring a constant availability of supplies.

National Blood Transfusion Center, Gaborone
As a medical Lab student, I assisted in performing regular quality control for tests, regular maintenance of analysers. I was involved in screening donors for TTIs, blood grouping and weak D testing. I prepared blood components from donor blood (packed RBC, FFP & platelets). Received blood component orders from hospital blood banks and dispatched blood products to hospitals. I decontaminated work surface before and after use and monitored temperature.
